What is City Living Cost?
City Living Cost is a free tool that lets you look up and compare the cost of living in cities across the United States. Whether you’re planning a move, negotiating a salary, or just curious how your city stacks up, our calculator and comparison tools give you a clear picture of what it actually costs to live somewhere.
How do I use the Cost of Living Calculator?
Head to the Cost of Living Calculator, enter the city you’re interested in, your annual income, and a few details about your household and lifestyle. The calculator will break down your estimated monthly expenses and show you what percentage of your income goes toward each category.
Can I compare multiple cities at once?
Yes. The Compare Cities tool lets you compare up to three U.S. cities side by side. Enter your cities and annual income, and you’ll get a detailed breakdown across all major cost categories — with the most affordable option highlighted in each row.
Where does the cost of living data come from?
Our data is sourced from a third-party cost of living API that aggregates real-world pricing across the United States. It covers roughly 50 data points per city, including rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, and more. Data is refreshed monthly to keep figures as current as possible.
How accurate is the data?
The figures on City Living Cost are estimates based on aggregated averages — they’re a useful starting point for research and comparison, but they won’t match every neighborhood or situation perfectly. Costs can vary significantly within a city depending on the specific area, your lifestyle, and current market conditions. We recommend using our data alongside your own research when making a major financial decision like relocating.
How often is the data updated?
City data is refreshed approximately once per month. You’ll always be viewing recently cached data — we don’t pull live figures on page load, which keeps the site fast and the data consistent.
What cities are covered?
City Living Cost covers hundreds of cities across the United States, from major metro areas to mid-sized cities. Coverage depends on the availability of data from our provider. If you search for a city and don’t find it, it may not yet be in our database — but we’re continually expanding our coverage.
Is City Living Cost free to use?
Yes, entirely free. The site is supported by advertising and may include affiliate links to relevant services like real estate platforms, moving companies, and job boards. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.
Do you store the information I enter into the calculator?
No. Any city names, income figures, or household details you enter into our tools are used only to generate your results on screen. That information is not saved, stored, or transmitted to our servers.
I found data that seems wrong. How do I report it?
We appreciate the heads-up. Because our data comes from a third-party source and represents city-wide averages, occasional discrepancies can occur. If something looks significantly off, please contact us and let us know which city and data point you’re seeing an issue with.
Do you have a blog?
Yes — check out the City Living Cost Blog for articles on cost of living trends, city comparisons, and tips for budgeting a move. We’re regularly adding new content.
